Rural Development: Village Adoption Programmes

Development, Healthcare, Empowerment - Chennai

Healthcare



  • Medical clinics to provide healthcare to local communities.

  • Previous clinics have included:

    • Cardiac and Dental Clinic in collaboration with Apollo Hospital and Udhayaraja’s Dental and Orthodontic Centre for 150 children from neighbouring government schools.

    • Eye clinic including surgery, post-operative care and free distribution of spectacles, in collaboration with Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital, for 150 adults. The hospital kindly extended the programme enabling users to receive free treatment for life and has expanded the programme nationally.

    • Eye clinic for 6 000 students from government schools in Red Hills, in collaboration with Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital, including free distribution of spectacles.

    • Eye clinic in collaboration with IIT Madras for women’s self-help group.

    • ENT clinic for 350 aged and mentally-challenged people from Rehbhoot Home and Little Drops Destitute Home, in collaboration with Rotary Central Margaret Sydney Hospital.




Nutrition



  • Organic farm eggs and vegetables are distributed daily to homes for the aged, orphanages and local underprivileged families.


Empowerment



  • Skills training in PET bottle filling and construction techniques for local tribal people, local communities living below the poverty line and local masons to enable them all to earn an income. 

  • Tried and tested organic vegetable and poultry farming techniques are demonstrated to local farmers. We plan to roll out the programme to slum dwellers in and around the city, educational institutions, private institutions and the local farming community. 


Entertainment and Recreation



  • Celebrations of festivals and national holidays with orphanages, homes for the aged and homes for the mentally challenged.


Education



  • Evening tuition for 170 children from Kanagi Nagar slum.

  • Programme includes daily evening snack, extracurricular activities and celebrations of festivals.
