School and Tuition Centre: Shastri Park

Education - New Delhi

Yamuna Khadar, under ISBT flyover, near Metro Vihar, Shastri Park, Shahdara

Why

  • Samarpan volunteers became aware of this community’s struggle for survival for daily existence and the resultant lack of importance placed on education along with the children’s eagerness to learn after opening a community kitchen to support the residents after demolition had taken place.
  • Approximately 8000 residents, families of rickshaw pullers, farmers and daily wage labourers live under a bridge situated close to the Yamuna River. Although the bridge provides some respite from the extreme weather conditions, the community lives in makeshift homes with no sanitation and little availability of drinking water. Our first response was to install a hand pump to reduce the hours spent collecting water.
  • Samarpan School provides the only source of education to students that do not attend formal schools and the Tuition Centre provides much needed tuition to enable students to cope in Government schools as the community is mostly illiterate and their parents are unable to assist with their homework.

School

  • Caters to 240 students.
  • Acts as a bridge by guiding students from basic learning methods to more advanced techniques required by the formal education system.
  • Teaches both basic and advanced learning techniques.
  • Includes vocational training, talent spotting and creativity development.
  • Offers sports, drama and arts and crafts.
  • Organises field trips, functions and celebrations of festivals for confidence building through participation.

Services

  • Provides a daily fresh, nutritious meal as nutrition plays a pivotal role.
  • Distributes textbooks, notebooks, stationery, schoolbags and summer and winter uniforms.
  • Provides an adult education and empowerment programme.
  • Arranges medical camps/clinics for the community, which provide treatment and medicines.

Vision

  • To instil values, hope and the confidence to realise dreams.
  • To create a thirst for knowledge, and a feeling of self-respect and respect for others.
  • To alleviate poverty through empowerment.
  • To create global citizens through breaking down barriers of nationality, religion, caste and creed and emphasising our shared humanity.
