Women's Empowerment: Guwahati

Empowerment - Assam

Sarab Bhatti, Rehabari, Guwahati, Assam

Why

  • The centre in Rehabari  caters for women from migrant families from Bihar, Bengal, and remote North-Eastern areas like Manipur. Their husbands and fathers work as daily wage labourers or are in menial jobs which do not provide the families with sustainable income.

Magical Stitches

  • The centre was opened/started on the 1st of February 2016 with 15 women. It has grown to 80 women, who are eager to learn new skills like tailoring and embroidery and who are given a certificate from Singer Indiaon completion of the 6-month course.

  • Along with this they are taught Henna Art and Mehendi.

  • The programme is functional in 2 batches of 20 women each for stitching and 2 similar batches for Henna and Mehendi Art.

  • Workshops on creativity and costing have assisted them to attain an optimum balance between creative design and practical application for suitable product development.

  • Post-training assistance is provided to beneficiaries with special needs, such as widowed, destitute and abandoned women.

Services

  • Welfare activities such as health camps, talks on reproductive health, contraception, hygiene and nutrition, as well as self-defence workshops are held.

  • Those who are unable to read and write also attend the school’s adult education classes.

  • Motivational activities to enhance self-confidence are conducted regularly for overall welfare.
